About Bert

 Bert Montgomery

Bert Montgomery grew up outside of New Orleans, lived in Memphis, and dearly loves the state that connects the two. He teaches Introduction to Religion courses at Mississippi State University, has blogged for The FaithLab, Huffington Post, Burnside Writer's Collective, and Red Letter Christians. He also serves as pastor of University Baptist Church in Starkville, Mississippi.

His writings have appeared in newspapers from Baton Rouge, LA, to Henderson, KY; in The Wittenburg Door and in Baptists Today; and from the now defunct CalebsCafe.com to the still-going-strong EthicsDaily.com. He has spoken in Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, United Church of Christ and Disciples of Christ Churches in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana. In 2008, he spoke on redemption and Johnny Cash at the 2nd Annual Pardon Johnny Cash Flower-Pickin' Festival in Starkville.

Prior to moving to Starkville, Bert served three Kentucky congregations as either youth minister or pastor. He worked for several years as a juvenile probation officer, first in Jackson, MS, then in Memphis, TN; and he delivered pizzas for Henry's Restaurant in Destrehan, Louisiana, back during his senior year of high school (Henry's made killer pizza!).

For what it's worth, after graduating from Destrehan High School (Go Wildcats!), Bert studied at Mississippi State University, Union University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Mississippi College, Memphis Theological Seminary, and the Baptist Seminary of Kentucky; he actually hung around long enough to get degrees from three of them.

Bert enjoys cheering with his family for the Mississippi State Bulldogs, the New Orleans Saints, and – when they are not playing MSU – the LSU Tigers (well, his family abstains from cheering for that last team).

Bert is available to lead retreats/conferences, speak to groups of any size, speak in churches, and share how God's got His mojo workin' anywhere and everywhere.  If you'd like Bert to come speak and share stories, send an email to info@bertmontgomery.com.

Bert's musings and mutterings reflect on God's grace surprising us in ordinary and often “not-so-likely” places. Addressing everything from Charlie Manson to Ellen DeGeneres, from the Allman Brothers Band and Willie Nelson to Tim Burton movies and friends who've committed suicide, Bert invites listeners to experience life with him and recognize Christ moving in the midst of it. His reflections are an excellent (and entertaining) tool for sparking much-needed group conversations on complicated and controversial topics.
